Judicial College of Victoria: How to use bench books and other resources effectively

The Judicial College Bench books (including the Victorian Sentencing Manual and Criminal Charge Book) are a valuable resource for practitioners and the judiciary alike. Learn how to navigate these new resources and how best to utilise them in practice. There will also be an opportunity for CBA members to provide feedback to the JCV about the features of the new bench books. Members are encouraged to provide feedback or suggestions when registering so that these matters can be constructively addressed by JCV during the session.

Drug and Alcohol Treatment Court Pilot: Learnings and Reflections

The County Court of Victoria Drug and Alcohol Treatment Court (DATC)  pilot commenced on 21 April 2021, representing the first time a drug court has operated in a higher jurisdiction in Victoria. The Criminal Bar Association is pleased to host DATC judicial officers, lawyers and members of the treatment team to share learnings and reflections from the pilot, and assist members to better understand this unique sentencing option. This session is also open to criminal law solicitors.

The High Court revised special leave process – What does it mean for the advocate?

The High Court has revised its special leave process in which oral hearings will be rare. This seminar will address written advocacy in applications for special leave to appeal, applications for leave to appeal and applications for removal in the High Court of Australia.

The seminar will be theoretical and practical: the why (what must be addressed) and the how. It will deal with public law, civil law and criminal law.
