The Jury Directions Act 2013 will empower judges to give directions that are as clear, brief, simple and comprehensible as possible. This joint program between the Supreme Court of Victoria and the Judicial College of Victoria will examine how the conduct of trials will change on 1st July 2013.
The discussion will include:
- the new request for directions process;
- changes to the judge's obligations to summarise evidence and arguments;
- new statutory directions on the meaning of beyond reasonable doubt;
- simplified consciousness of guilt directions
