Oliver practises in all areas of commercial and public law.
Before coming to the Bar, he practised as a solicitor at Allens in its disputes team for five years and was an Associate at the Federal Court of Australia and Australian Competition Tribunal to the Honourable Justice John Middleton AM.
Oliver has been involved in complex disputes in a variety of courts and tribunals. He has particular experience in contractual and trust disputes, class actions, insolvency, and in regulatory investigations and commissions of inquiry (including royal commissions). He also has experience in judicial review matters, advice to government bodies and an abiding interest in public law overall: see his recent case note on the High Court's judgment in the constitutional law case of Vanderstock v Victoria here.
Since coming to the Bar, Oliver has advised and appeared (led and unled) in a broad spectrum of commercial, public and administrative law matters, including in relation to:
- contractual warranty claims under a business sale agreement;
- enforcement of Chinese foreign judgments in Australia;
- property disputes under the Sale of Land Act;
- large discretionary family trust disputes;
- contract and ACL claims in the context of goods and services disputes, including building and construction;
- loan, debt and other financial disputes;
- corporate insolvency and personal bankruptcy;
- tax issues, such as stamp duty and director penalty notices;
- employment, restraint of trade and confidentiality;
- ASIC investigations and regulatory powers;
- migration judicial reviews; and
- the statutory powers of government bodies or agencies.
