Nick Poynder graduated from the University of Tasmania with an LL.B (Hons) in 1983. He was admitted to practice in Tasmania in 1984 then moved to Melbourne to work as a solicitor in 1986. In 1988 Nick travelled overseas and worked with the legal profession in London in 1989, before returning to Melbourne and signing the Victorian Bar Roll in 1990. In 1993 Nick moved to Sydney where he worked as Coordinator of the Refugee Advice and Casework Service (NSW) and then as a Senior Legal Officer with the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission. Nick completed a Masters of Law at the University of New South Wales in 1997, and signed the NSW Bar Roll in 1998.
Nick is based at Frederick Jordan Chambers in Sydney but also undertakes work in Victoria. His practice is primarily in administrative law; in particular immigration and anti-discrimination law. Nick is also a registered migration agent, which means that he can appear before the Migration Review Tribunal and Refugee Review Tribunal. He was one of the first migration agents to be registered in Australia, following the introduction of the registration scheme in 1992.
